What is Synergy?

From human to human, our associations and definitions often differ regarding a particular word.
Keeping this in mind, I find it helpful to clarify what the word points to.
In my perspective, synergy is the label applied to the various elements of nature interacting in a profitable way to the whole and its balanced parts.
Holons work together for the benefit of multiple holons on multiple levels. (See Integral Theory)
They synergize with plants, earth, fungus, air, animals, etc.
Plants and (some) Fungi are stunning examples of synergy in action. The Mycorrhizae (fungus roots) are highly proficient at nutrient absorption but cannot photosynthesize carbon. With a host plant, the mycelium effectively provides root extensions, passing more nutrients/moisture to the plant and receiving carbon. This is a symbiotic relationship, but things get even more amazing very fast. The connectedness of these relationships has very long ripples.
With plants able to grow much stronger and faster, they can produce an abundance of oxygen as they breathe animal-produced carbon dioxide. Thanks for the air! Living or dead, plants can also provide us with food, medicine, clothing, building materials, fuel, etc. This allows animal and human evolution to progress in a grand way too.
We can participate by using our hearts, hands, and heads to live with synergy. While gardening, we can set up the environment for helpful mycelium and food-producing plants to do their thing. Our family gets well nourished and grows healthy too. Then they can do anything of the amazing things humans get up to.
Witnessing and revering synergy is inspiring enough to fill me with excitement and motivation for participating.
For us humans, the synergistic way of sustenance is usually quite simple and thus requires only little effort chains. Clean water access, high-quality food, electromagnetic power... We can enjoy all of these gifts in balance with nature. Let's get to it!

Synergistic Structures
What if you could keep your living space at an optimal temperature year-round without electricity or gas? It turns out that it is not so difficult to achieve. Often the very land you plan to build on can provide all the materials to create a super-insulated, organic, earth-ship-style home.
Building with the land, rather than on the land, we can enjoy the satisfying and healthy labor that goes into making a living space just how we want it. Earthen walls, heat sinks, hobbit-hole style homes, and other creative solutions make for many options to suit various situations and purposes. Cobb houses are earthquake proof, fire proof, water and windproof! They take quite a bit of labor, but it may be easier than paying off a mortgage for 30 years. Adobe is a famous method of building from the mud of the earth as well. A little concrete on the top and bottom makes it legal to code. |
The famous Earthship Brighton is built into a hillside and features a garden on top of the living space.
It manages heat very well year round and has plenty of natural light. Unlike common commercial practices, which entail a lot of garbage pollutants during building, earthships, like this one, incorporate waste materials like used tires and bottles into the walls for structure and insulation. If you want to learn more about this autonomous living space, they conduct tours and 3-day educational courses on building earthships. |

Rammed earth gives a very sturdy, beautiful result similar to sandstone. A soil test can be done to check how good the earthen material is already and what the best ratio of soil additives (sand or clay) would be.
One can integrate modern tech or old school methods into building. For legal purposes, a little concrete and rebar are required in most 'developed' countries. Electrical conduits can be installed in the walls along with extra insulating material and layers of beautiful rock, gems, or colored sand. Water systems can be installed throughout rammed earth houses as long as they are insulated adequately for the climate.
In the video below, this couple chose not to install any electrical lines or in-house plumbing as they thought that was the wisest choice for their health and community.

Synergistic Power Options
Did you know you can make a great generator from old washing machines? A hydro system with 15+ PSI can provide plenty of electricity for energy-efficient living. The system in this video produces 600KW per month!
The average USA home uses less than 900KW per month, but most of this is in air-conditioning, heating, and kitchen appliances. If one wants more power, these washing machine generators can be hooked up to anything that will spin the shaft, including wind, bicycle, waterwheel, geothermal steam, etc.
